Being a realtor in Millburn/Short Hills is a wonderful career. My line of business affords me the opportunity to get to know a wide variety of people in the area. I am currently the chair of the community outreach program at Hartshorn elementary school. The committee and I sponsor a yearly holiday charity event for foster children in need. We help organize the community to buy and deliver gifts to these children. This year we realized that children such as these are probably forgotten during times that are less commercialized. Community service outreach embarked on a project called Backpack Buddies this school year. We organized ourselves quickly and used our own invaluable resource, the School Supply Team, to help us with the project.
Every year the School Supply Team works hard to get us bulk discounts for the school supplies we purchase for the school. They extended this discount to the supplies we accrued for the foster children. When parents were buying their children’s backpacks and school supplies, they were given the option of being a “Backpack Buddy” and sponsoring a foster child’s back pack full of supplies. More than 190 children were sponsored this year—an enormous percentage of the community participated in the program. Over the summer, the Backpack Buddy Team will pack and deliver these backpacks to the Division of Youth and Family Services. Sheryl Harpel was a crucial player in this process. She describes how impressed she was by the support she got from the town, “People here really want to help in concrete ways. They are eager to jump on an opportunity to help directly with heartfelt deeds”.
The real estate business in Millburn/Short Hills is booming for good reason—a community with a heart is not something easy to find.
